Being a generous member of a community has a lasting impact on the community as well as oneself. At Kendal, we believe the old adage that the most selfless thing you can do is to help other people. That is why Kendal residents, staff and board members log over 40,000 volunteer hours per year, supporting a wide range of causes.
The Meals on Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) is an organization established to fight senior hunger. Like Kendal, MOWAA works to ensure seniors live a life of dignity. MOWAA provides over one million meals to seniors daily. Some chapters feed groups at senior centers while others deliver directly to the homes of older adults with mobility issues. Kendal at Oberlin residents are one group among the 2 million volunteers with MOWAA.
Harvest for Hunger is a local campaign that raises hunger awareness right here in Ohio. In 2014 Harvest for Hunger raised enough money and food for 17 million meals to feed residents of 21 counties in Northeastern Ohio. Approximately 1 out of 6 people have difficulty feeding their families in our state and 25% of children are forced to go hungry.
One of the biggest problems in our country is the underfunding of many public and some private schools. To help both our children and the future of the United States, we make an effort to mitigate the damage caused by the lack of financial resources. Reading to the children, offering help in the computer laboratory and chaperoning field trips are excellent ways to lend a hand. Kendal at Oberlin residents have created a program called Publicity Plugs.
Family Promise is a group dedicated to helping homeless and impoverished families reach the independence we all desire. They integrate smart policies with educational outreach to get folks on the track to becoming self-sustaining. Family Promise also provides shelter and food to those in need.
We join hands with a variety of community service groups to help people with a wide range of challenging circumstances. Local shelters for abused women and children or homeless families are in constant need of support. Kendal at Oberlin is happy to assist.
The appearance of our public area is important to us. We all deserve a clean, naturally beautiful places to seek recreation. We take pride in our parks and public spaces and encourage all community members to do the same.
